I have recently noticed that a few yogurt companies have begun to add savory ingredients and vegetables to their yogurts. I decided to try making a savory yogurt bowl for myself for breakfast. It’s true, there is no reason that yogurt has to be combined with fruit, sugar and granola…why not add vegetables instead? After all, many Mediterranean dishes add yogurt to their recipes. It could also be a nice healthy alternative to eggs for breakfast. So here is what I came up with.
I began by buying some nice thick & creamy, plain Greek yogurt. Greek yogurt is high in protein and probiotics that are good for digestive health. It is a great way to start your day!
Next I gathered together a few ingredients that are often added to Mediterranean dishes such as a Greek salad.
- chick peas
- sun-dried tomatoes
- extra virgin olive oil
- red onions
- herbs (parsley or mint)
I sauteed the tomatoes and onions and chick peas in a skillet with a little olive oil and cumin seasoning to give them a richer flavor. Then I garnished my yogurt in a bowl with the vegetables, some black olives, toasted pumpkin seeds, chick peas, a dollop of harissa, and a dash of chimichurri seasoning. The final touch was a drizzle of olive oil and a squeeze of lemon, some arugula, salt & pepper. (Chopped cucumbers and fresh mint would make a great addition also!)
This savory Mediterranean yogurt bowl was really delicious for breakfast, but it could easily work for any meal.

I will definitely try something like this again. Now I am thinking of other possibilites…like an Asian inspired yogurt bowl with fresh ginger, snow peas, water chestnuts and red pepper. Or a Mexican style one with black beans, cilantro and roasted tomatoes, corn and chile powder. Pureed cooked carrots, or any pesto swirled in would be delicious too..Hmmm…so many ideas!
